Hockey Day Kickoff Event

SAINT CLOUD, MINN. – It’s official – St. Cloud is home to Hockey Day Minnesota in January of 2018. This huge event brings together the Minnesota Wild and FOX Sports North with a different community each year for a day of celebration for the sport our state is known for: hockey.

Celebrate the State of Hockey in St. Cloud and join the Hockey Day Minnesota planning committee for a kickoff event. Hear from Mayor Dave Kleis on the importance of this event coming to St. Cloud. Wayne Peterson, Director of Events and Promotions for the Minnesota Wild will be present to talk about the selection process of choosing St. Cloud and the involvement of the Wild in this event. Hockey Day Minnesota 2018 Chair Brian Schoenborn will share more details on what exactly we can expect on this January day in 2018. 2017 Hockey Day Minnesota Chair Greg Gartner from Stillwater MN will shed some light on what it takes to pull off a successful Hockey Day Minnesota in our community. St. Cloud Youth Hockey Association president Mike Petroske will speak about the excitement that an event like this brings to the hockey community in St. Cloud, from players to parents to volunteers. And St. Cloud Rotary president Troy Fritz will take the excitement up a notch as planning for concerts, games, food, shows and more at Lake George commences.

St. Cloud is and has always been a hockey town. The St. Cloud Youth Hockey Association puts over 450 boys and girls on the ice learning the game of hockey each year. In 2016, St. Cloud was named the 8th Best Hockey Town in the Country by SmartAsset.com. Twenty nine former St. Cloud State University hockey players have gone on to the NHL. But hockey is so much more than three periods and a sheet of ice.

“Hockey is far more than a game,” says chair Brian Schoenborn, “It is a culture, a way of treating people and a perspective on life.  It teaches life skills around hard work, respect, teamwork, leadership, commitment, service and selflessness.  We are excited to welcome the entire State of Hockey to St. Cloud for Hockey Day 2018 and celebrate the great game we love, and its great people, in our great community.”

Please join in the action and attend the Hockey Day Minnesota Kickoff Event on Wednesday, May 3rd at 5pm at the St. Cloud City Hall Council Chambers. This press conference will keep you informed, get you excited, and most of all, celebrate St. Cloud and the State of Hockey.

ST. CLOUD LANDS HOCKEY DAY MINNESOTA 2018

SAINT CLOUD, MINN. – The City of St. Cloud in partnership with the Minnesota Wild and FOX Sports North is excited to announce that Hockey Day Minnesota is coming to St. Cloud in January of 2018. A temporary outdoor rink will be constructed at Lake George Municipal Park and tentative play is expected on Lake George as well.

Hockey Day Minnesota was started in 2007 by the Minnesota Wild to celebrate a great sport in Minnesota, the State of Hockey. The event is produced in partnership with FOX Sports North, Minnesota Hockey, and the chosen local community each year. The event is truly dedicated to the sport, with high school and college games taking place all day and many fun festivities in between for all fans to enjoy. The event ends with a Minnesota Wild game at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
